Art from Research exhibition 10.-27.11.2009

At the Summer School 2009 Design Connections Doctoral School students were encouraged to work with their research topics in a creative and experimental way. The results of the workshop could be presented in another mode than writing e.g. in a form of installation, performance, video, painting or any kind of three dimensional artefact. The results from this experimental process are now exhibited in the “Art from research” exhibition at Aralis galleria.

Graduate School Decisions

The steering group of Design Connections Graduate School has in its meeting 28th September decided to propose the following persons to be chosen for student positions:

- Krista Kosonen
- Tjhien Liao
- Tatu Marttila

The Academy of Finland granted at the beginning of this year the Design Connections Graduate School funding for four doctoral students for the years 2010-2013. Joining the University of Art and Design Helsinki and the University of Lapland in the doctoral school will be the Helsinki School of Economics, University of Technology, University of Oulu and Tampere University of Technology.

Open positions at Design Connections Doctoral School

The Design Connections Doctoral School opens four research student positions for applications. All the positions will be appointed for a period of four years starting January 1st 2010. Research students shall acquire comprehensive expertise in design research, complete doctoral studies according to the Graduate School curriculum and present doctoral dissertations. The applicants shall have master level degree in design or other applicable field.

Cross-disciplinary Design Connections Doctoral School, co-ordinated by University of Art and Design Helsinki, educates design researchers and experts on strategic level of design. It increases their capabilities to generate knowledge about the connections of design with the society focusing on the cultural connections of design; the links between welfare, equal participation and design; and design, emerging technologies, business and innovation.

Free form applications, with CV and a five page research plan, shall be sent to Register Office, University of Art and Design Helsinki, Hämeentie 135 C, FIN-00560 Helsinki, Finland or kirjaamo@taik.fi, tel. + 358 9 7563 0206. Applications are due to August 11th 2009, 3 p.m.

New funding for the Design Connections Graduate School

The Academy of Finland has granted the Design Connections Graduate School funding for four doctoral students for the years 2010-2013. Joining the University of Art and Design Helsinki and the University of Lapland in the doctoral school will be the Helsinki School of Economics, University of Technology, University of Oulu and Tampere University of Technology. The positions will be open for application during summer 2009.

The Art of Research conference 24-25 November 2009

The new institutional connection between research and art/design has promoted much discussion concerning the dialogue between theory and practice, or ‘reflecting’ and ‘making’, the emphasis often being on the question of how they might be combined in a productive way.

The aim of the Art and Research conference is to continue and update the discussions concerning the relationship between art and design practices and research, in terms of both content and modes of presentation. The conference is hosted by School of Design in co-operation with Design Connection Doctoral School. We invite papers by doctoral students, post-doctoral researchers and academics dealing.

Thematic seminar during the spring term 2009

The DCDS thematic seminar will take place during the spring term 2009 every second Monday on the School of Design / research unit from 10.15 to 11.15. The seminar will form a platform where

(a) to share and develop the ideas and themes concerning students’ ongoing research projects and
(b) to test and get feedback from different outcomes of the research

The seminar gives opportunity for students to present

(1) papers to be submitted for conferences/seminars
(2) papers to be presented in conferences/seminars (already accepted to be presented)
(3) other papers and experimental cases

The Industrial Designer of the Year – Tuuli Mattelmäki

One of the leaders of Design Connections Doctoral School Tuuli Mattelmäki has been elected the Industrial Designer of the Year 2008. Mattelmäki works as a professor of industrial design in the School of Design.

The Finnish Association of Designers Ornamo and Association of Professional Graphic Designers in Finland Grafia gave out awards in Kaapelitehdas, Helsinki, on 1 October 2008.

Salu Ylirisku to Palo Alto

Design Connections status student Salu Ylirisku joined the PARC research groups in Palo Alto California for four months during spring 2008. This visit is part of his doctoral studies. He will be back in Helsinki in May 2008.

Tero Heikkinen received a grant from Wihuri foundation
