Kirsi Niinimäki graduated as a textile designer from University of Art and Design Helsinki in 1987. She worked as an industrial textile designer in Finlayson 1986-1988 and after that in her own enterprise Designstudio Triarte 1989-1997. She has been working as Principal Lecture in Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences since 1997 (earlier EVTEK University of Applied Sciences, EVTEK Institute of Art and Design).
While running the Natural Dyes Product Development Project in years 2000-2003 she interested sustainable issues (http://kasvivari.evtek.fi). She studied the environmental sciences in Helsinki University and got interested to do research. Her research interest lies in sustainable design and future scenarios. This study leans on the user-centered knowledge to approach sustainability issues in the context of home textiles and clothing. What does a consumer value and expect of ecological and ethical design? Can future fashion be something totally else than today? Can clothes be do-it-yourself or module structured? Or can futures home textiles be unique and just designed for you with help of newest digitally technique and design services? The study approaches emotionally durable design through the user’s emotional bonding with textiles and clothing and the aim is to find ways to use these engagements in design process to produce deep product satisfaction and extend product lifespan.
