I was born and raised in Xi’an, went to Beijing for college and got BEng in Industrial Design from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and MA in Industrial Design from Beijing Institute of Technology. Then I started my career as a design researcher at Central Saint Martins College in London in 2008 and joined in the Design Connections Doctoral School as a Doctoral Student in Feb 2010.
With an early background in Industrial Design Engineering, my research interests have turned to the design related psychological, sociological and business studies, which include Product/Brand Experience, Affective Design, Design Strategy for the Emerging Markets (China especially), Fuzzy Front End Innovation and Service Design. I’m currently going increasingly deep into the psychology and sociology concerning Design and Memory for my doctoral research.
The title of my doctoral research is “The Impact of Collective Memory of Early Experience on Design”
Research Questions:
This doctoral research intends (1) to bridge the knowledge gaps between emotional design, the collective memory of early experience and the markets of former planned economy countries; (2) to explore a new affective design strategy and methodology based on the target cohort’s collective memory of early experience.
Research Question 1: What is the relationship between a cohort’s (age-related group) collective memories of early experience and their preferences and emotional responses to products/brands, especially in the markets of former planned economy countries?
Research Question 2: How might designers use target cohort’s collective memories of early experience to design desired emotional experience and to build closer relationships between users and products/brands?
Besides, I’m also doing a study on Service Design methods at this moment.
