I was born and raised in Xi’an (the greatest city in China in my opinion), went to Beijing for college and got BEng in Industrial Design from Beihang University and MA in Industrial Design from Beijing Institute of Technology. I started my research project in London at the end of 2008 and joined in the Design Connections Doctoral School in Feb 2010.
The title of my research is “Product Emotion, Attachment & the Impact of Collective Memory of Early Experience on Design”
Research Area
Industrial Design, Product Experience, Affective Design, User Research
Research Questions
This research intends to (1) bridge the gaps between affective design, the collective memory of early experience and the markets of former planned economy countries; (2) explore a new affective design methodology, especially for the former planned economy countries. The main research questions are:
• In a former planned economy context, what is the relationship between the individual’s previous experience, the collective memory, and current emotional needs and preferences?
• What types of product relevant emotions might be evoked by the collective memory of early experience?
• How might designers use target user group’s collective memories of early experience to influence users’ affective responses to contemporary products?
