DATA as Art – ART as Data Seminar
September 20th and 21st 2011
Aalto University School of Art and Design, Helsinki

Data is one of the most essential, complex and fascinating aspects of research. Research and data are inseparable and bounded together in multiple ways. However, what is data? Is there a common understanding to what could be perceived as data? What is the relationship between art, design and data? Can art and design be turned into as data? Additionally, how should we treat data so that it would be seen as art? Is it even necessary? What kind of modalities these kinds of approaches might reveal? The seminar invites researchers to discuss data – a topic that is common to all researchers regardless their backgrounds or scientific families. The seminar takes place at the Aalto University School of Art and Design. During the seminar, the theme will be addressed by invited keynote lectures from different perspectives. The questions will be further discussed in parallel paper sessions.

The seminar is hosted by ELOMEDIA Doctoral Program of Audiovisual Media and Design Connections Doctoral Program in co-operation with Aristotle in Change research project and The Department of Motion Picture, Television and Production Design at the Aalto University School of Art and Design.

PRE REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS SEPTEMBER 16th 2011 to the following address: michaela.brann@aalto.fi

The seminar has no registration fee; however the seminar program does not include lunches. The seminar venue is Studionäyttämö in the Media Center Lume at Aalto University School of Art and Design.

September 20th and 21st, 2011
Aalto University School of Art and Design, Helsinki, FINLAND

We invite doctoral students, researchers and scholars to submit extended abstracts (max 3 A4 pages, font 12) by 15th August 2011. The papers should discuss the following questions as they appear in author’s own research project. The paper can answer the following questions, but might also stimulate other relevant questions:

How to use and interpret data in a creative way?
What is the relationship between a research object and data?
How to document art and design processes for research purposes?
What is the role of data – how is it used in different phases of study?
How does the research question guide the acquisition of data?

Proposals are to be sent to ELOMEDIA Coordinator Michaela Bränn michaela.brann@aalto.fi Please, include your name, contact information and affiliated organisation in the paper.

Design Connections Doctoral School and Department of Design, Aalto University, School of Art and Design invite you to its doctoral seminar titled:

Shifting Territories

A discipline that seeks to advance itself urges its practitioners to look into other territories. Design, in its practice of imagining the new is consistently moving in such territories, with its concern for context, application and consequences to individuals, communities, organizations, institutions, localities, markets or cultures.

Territories and regions are also topics of disciplinary research. Environmental, geographical or cultural settings ground the context as focus, but yet allow multiple interpretations as they change. A territory is also subject to boundaries, acting as limits, giving rise to political negotiations of ownership and protectionism.

A discursive platform that provides trans-disciplinary viewpoints and one that also engages in exchange of issues, can aid in a shift, helping overcome borders between disciplines. The Design Research community from the School of Design, at the Aalto University, invites you to Shifting Territories.

The interdisciplinary seminar brings together 6 Doctoral Student speakers from University of Lapland, Oulu University and Aalto University.

Key note speakers:

Päivi Soppela, Senior Scientist at Arctic Center, University of Lapland

Prof. Jack Whalen, Visiting Professor, Aalto University

Time and Location:

The full day seminar begins at 9 AM on the 26th of January at Aalto University, School of Art and Design, Hämeentie 135 C, Department of Design, Room 857, 8th floor.
