The following text is in conjunction with my coming NORDES paper. It is an invitation and call for participation from a Facebook event. I published the original text in Finnish here, because you won't be able to see the piece of text, unless you log into Facebook. Here, however, you will be able to see the piece of text publicly. For a translation see below the Finnish version.

EVENT NAME:

Asioin kahden viikon ajan vain kivijalkaliikkeissä

ORIGINAL TEXT:

Mistä on kyse?

Kukin osallistuu tavallaan.

Helsingin Sanomien artikkeli aiheesta: http://bit.ly/aHBfwI

Lue lisää haasteesta ja edellisen haastejakson tunnelmista täältä: http://kivijalkahoito.wordpress.com/

TRANSLATION:

What is it about? Try to live without any chain stores in two weeks.

How easy or difficult it is to shop only in "independent" stores? Are there any options apart from the S Group, Kesko and all the other chain stores? What kind of city we want: cold and boring, pseudo-cheap chain stores and supermarkets, or do you want to live in the city, where you will be served, where you can affect how and where you shop, which is also ecologically friendly, maybe even employing ...

After the last little shop will be closed, we no longer have a real choice. Look at what happened to movie theaters! Now the theaters are in the hands one major player and the selection has not become more diversified ...

June ketjuttomuushaaste was a success and now a new challenge has been thrown into the air! Challenge concerns the first two weeks of August. During the challenge to doing shopping only in those stone base shops.

what we learned from the previous challenge, is that its not more expensive to shop in stone based stores than chain stores.

Alko does not count in this event because the law does not allow for alternatives.

Otherwise challenge the rules are not written in stone. Each participates in the way they want to.

Helsingin Sanomat article on this topic: http://bit.ly/aHBfwI

Read more about the challenge and the challenge of the previous period's mood here: http://kivijalkahoito.wordpress.com/

24-25 June 2010

Manchester, UK
Organised by the Manchester Architecture Research Centre

In the last decade numerous STS trained scholars engaged in a venture of unpacking design practices. Yet, to study the practical course of design means to be simultaneously involved in the subject of politics and in the particular sort of politics that is centred on objects (Latour & Weibel, Making Things Public). Recent studies in political philosophy and STS have argued that politics is not limited anymore to citizens, elections, votes, petitions, ideologies and particular institutionalised conflicts (DeVries, What is Political in Sub-politics?), and have reformulated the question of politics into one of cosmopolitics (Stengers, Cosmopolitics; Latour, Politics of Nature) and ontological politics (Mol, Actor Network Theory and After). The “political” is not defined as a way of codifying particular forms of contestation but as opening up new sites and objects of contestation (Barry, Political Machines).

Initial questions to the topic are:
1. How to project your personal voice and the personal voice of your data (e.g. people you interviewed) through out your manuscript?
2. How to retain your personal voice or the personalities that your data represents?
3. How to balance these voices and how to deal with the big emotions in your interview data?
4. How to address the people, test subjects in your research? These question arose when done a research using probes?

Sometimes your data is so rich on emotions and stories that you can easily produce both a scientific manuscript and a novel type book. Publications are not often in published in the personal form. Dissertations however, can contain more personal forms. Different disciplines advocate different voices. It may become a problem if your opponent is from a different discipline. However this has not yet experienced in practice at TaiK. Also in a design related degree playfulness in language could even be encouraged.

When quoting real life stories 5 sentences is good practice. Usually the personal form is more used in the dissertation. Publications however, are often more written in objective form. There are different graphic strategies to approach quotation in your manuscript. Color, font, size, italic, etc. Explain why you use these quotations as exemplar.

Inside reader: Whom are you addressing in your dissertation. This will most likely be those people that are closely related to your references and your resources.

It is important not to forget to mention the researcher’s background. For in this case the researcher is female herself, a jeweler herself and Finnish of background. These belong to the pre-conditions of the research. Important: don’t fall in love with your text and dont fall in love with your data. (Emotional stories)
